Homework Assignments
Information
All homework assignments will be posted to this page. Assignments will
be posted no later than 9 days before they are due.
Be sure your write-up is neat and clear,
all pages are stapled together, and that your name is written on the first page.
The grader will deduct points for sloppy or unreadable work.
For each assignment I will indicate suggested warm-up
exercises, which tend to be easier than those to be handed in and are all
odd-number. I also suggest you work on odd-number problems similar to the assigned even-number
problems, especially if you get stuck. It helps to be able to
check your solution and make sure you're on the right track.

- Additional Exercises to hand in (very important):
- Rewrite Example 1 of Section 12.2 (pages 750-751)
letting a=1 throughout (this is the way it was done in lecture).
Make sure you understand the proofs of convergence and divergence, as
well as the derivation of the partial sum (equation 3) and its limiting
value. You are responsible for knowing these.
- Prove equation 3 of Example 1 (page 751) using
mathematical induction.
Suggested warm-up exercises (do not hand these in):
- 12.1: Selected odd
problems from 9 to 39
- 12.2: Selected odd problems
from 11 to 45
Homework 4
due Wednesday, February 7
- 9.1: 6, 8, 10, 14
- Discovery Project: Arc Length Contest (page
590)
To get credit for this problem (which will be graded) you need only exhibit
a function that satisfies the three properties given.
However if you are interested try to find one with the smallest arc length!
I'll announce the winner in class.
